Ambitious Science Teaching Virtual Book Study | October 22, 2025 | 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
This year-long virtual study club will explore the transformative ideas in Ambitious Science Teaching. Together, we’ll unpack the book’s powerful practices for helping students engage with authentic, meaningful science phenomenon while honoring their unique histories, social interactions and connections to local and global communities.
Throughout the school year, we’ll meet to dive into specific strategies from the book, discuss how they can be applied in real classrooms, and reflect on how they shape our teaching. Whether you’re new to the text or looking to deepen your practice, this ongoing community will offer inspiration, practical tools and thought-provoking conversation.
A copy of the book is included with your registration fee.

Alex Gerber
In his role at Washington University's Institute for School Partnership, Alex focuses on developing high quality science instructional materials as well as professional learning experiences. In this work, he blends research and practice in order to support teachers as they implement evidenced based instructional strategies for teaching science. His research is focused on science teacher pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), high quality instructional materials, and professional learning for K-5 science teachers. Additionally, Alex teaches certification and graduate level courses in science education.
Heather Milo
At Washington University, Heather Milo develops high-quality instructional materials for mySci 6-8 and brokers multi-year partnerships through Sci314 to integrate research, practice and systems that improve outcomes for teachers and students. She is a dedicated Science Instructional Specialist with a passion for fostering meaningful teacher and student engagement with science through high-quality instructional materials, holistic individualized coaching and systemic approaches to professional learning. With a Master’s in Science Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Heather has worked extensively in the field of science education, developing and scaling instructional materials and professional learning programs.
Adam Scimone
Adam Scimone helps our member districts by developing tailored learning opportunities and professional development programs. Adam began his career as a scientist and in 2008, moved into education as a marine science instructor in the Florida Keys. He later transitioned into a formal classroom setting where he spent time teaching secondary science, overseeing a middle school gifted program and working as an instructional coach. Adam was the 2017 Kirkwood School District Teacher of the Year and a Saint Louis Regional Teacher of the year. He is passionate about fostering curiosity and wonder in young people.
