This hands-on workshop is suitable for all levels of experience with Socratic Seminar will equip teachers with the tools and strategies to lead engaging Socratic Seminars and to confidently measure student learning through the use of best practices in Socratic Seminars.
You'll have the opportunity to engage in a seminar and learn how to select complex texts, craft thought-provoking opening questions and balance leadership and participation. In addition, formative and summative assessment options connected to seminars for students will be shared along with how Socratic Seminars can be used to successfully inform instruction.
Discover the effective use of Formative and Summative Assessment of Socratic Seminars through use of success criteria and gain the skill to use content of Socratic Seminars to formulate writing prompts for academic writing.
Oscar Graybill is a former San Diego City Schools’ EXCEL Outstanding Teacher and former California Mentor Teacher. Oscar used Cooperative Learning and Socratic Seminar for thirty years as primary tools in his student-centered classes. He remains active in many educational reform projects including serving as a member of the Washington State Commission on Student Learning. In addition to Socratic Seminars, Oscar also provides professional development in student engagement, critical thinking, close reading skills and Socratic questioning strategies.
