Supporting Newcomer Multilingual Learners | March 11, 2025 | 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM CT
In this workshop, newcomer MLs are defined as students attending U.S. schools for the first time. Even schools with quality EL programs can often feel unprepared when a newly immigrated student with low English language proficiency shows up. Newcomer MLs require an exceptional level of support, nurturing and advocacy.
Participants will learn the following key components to teaching newcomer MLs:
- Knowing your newcomers’ life experiences and what assets they bring to the classroom
- Creating a welcoming, safe and caring classroom environment and culture
- Guiding students’ acculturation to U.S. schools
- Providing high-quality instruction that makes content comprehensible
- Devoting time specifically to English language development
- Meeting newcomers’ social emotional needs
